7Dr. Gerstman takes a holistic approach toward the treatment of acne. The causes of acne are multifactorial; therefore, our treatment protocol is individualized to meet our client’s needs.

Dr. Leslie Gerstman is well aware of that conventional acne treatments don’t work for everyone. The inefficiency of traditional treatments stem from the fact that there are multiple causes of acne and each patient’s skin has distinct characteristics and individualities.

Dr. Gerstman prefers a personalized approach to acne, and recommend treatments based on the patients’ needs. Moreover, because we care about our patients’ well-being after they leave our offices, we prefer to take a holistic approach towards acne.

Holistic Acne Program: FAQ

Holistic Acne

How do you treat acne caused by bacteria?

Even though everyone has certain types of bacteria on their skin, not everyone will develop acne. Acne appears when the bacteria cultures are provided with a perfect breeding environment, namely clogged pores and excess oils that cause infection. Depending on the severity of the acne and the patient’s individual needs, bacteria-resulted acne can be reversed via gentle peels likes CosMedix, botanical washes, and mild toners.

How do you treat acne caused by clogged pores?

In some cases of acne, the causes are hereditary, meaning that their bodies are programmed to shed dead skin cells slower than usual, thus making the pores more prone to clogging. The recommended treatment for this form of acne varies based on the patient’s skin type, such as:

  • Gentle fruit acid peels, a treatment recommended for patients who aren’t taking conventional acne medication or who have active cold sores
  • Topical retinoid-based medication, which is ideal for severe acne  unresponsive totraditional treatments
How do you treat acne caused by excess oil production?

When the skin produces more oils than normal, then there is a high chance that the natural lubricants fill in the pores and, along with other impurities, create the perfect environment for bacteria. In order to decrease the production of oil in the skin, we use Isolaz, a revolutionary treatment that combines the power of broadband light with a gentle vacuum that eliminates dead cells and bacteria located at the surface of the epidermis. Isolaz eliminates the need to utilize a harsh drying treatment  by reducing pores and oil glands’ sizes.

How do you treat acne caused by inflammation?

If you experience severe breakouts with painful red pimples, cysts, scarring, and excessive facial redness,  it is most likely caused by stress and unhealthy diet. Therefore, the acne treatment implies making changes  to your daily routine.  Dr. Gerstman will thoroughly evaluate your current lifestyle to determine the main sources of stress and address it, as well as make several recommendations to improve your diet.

What are the common causes of acne?

Dr. Gerstman strongly believes that the first step in treating acne correctly consists of identifying the main cause. The sources of the acne breakouts can be split into four categories:

  • A weakened cell turnover process that inevitably leads to clogged pores
  • Bacteria growth
  • Excess oil production
  • Inflammation resulting  from poor lifestyles choices or medication
